Twelve-year-old Adama lives in an isolated village in West Africa. Beyond the cliffs extends Le Monde de Souffles where the Nassaras rule. One night Samba, his elder brother disappears and Adama defying his seniors decides to leave in search of him. With the unbroken determination of a boy becoming a man his quest takes him overseas, towards the North to the frontlines of the First World War: we are in 1916.
Taken from a true story: Adama is a story about the fighters of the « Force noire » the Senegalese infantry who came to fight for the French colonial empire during the 1914-18 war. Abdoulaye N’Diaye was the only surviving member of the contingent until his death in 1998. It was his son who told the story of this traumatic experience to Julien Lilti the screenwriter of the film.
